3 Life Lessons You Can Learn From The Duck
With the start of a new semester, students can easily get lost in the daily grind of college life. Tyson Wooters is here to reignite the passion that students have for their organization by teaching the role of “community” in their lives.
Tyson was The Duck—University of Oregon’s beloved mascot and 2004 National Mascot Champion. He spent his Saturday’s firing up the crowd, performing stunts and rallying the stands. From this unusual experience, he discovered the importance of positively contributing to a community. With his keynote, Always Wear Your Head, Tyson helps students across the country understand the life-altering power of being a part of something much larger than themselves.
As it turns out, students can learn a lot from a duck.
Learn how and why to truly commit yourself to your group’s highest ideals.
Every university, every school, every club, every fraternity or sorority, every organization on campus was formed with some guiding ideal in mind. These ideals appear in many formats: Mission statement, motto, mantra, credo, pledge, constitution, etc. But they all essentially serve the same purposes: be a guide for decision-making when the right choice isn’t crystal clear.
Learn more about your own role and function on campus; just thinking about your job/position should fill you with excitement!
One of my favorite quotes is, “Do something you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life.” Not only do I tend to do better at things I enjoy, but I also enjoy doing things I enjoy! So what is important to you? What do you want to do with your free time, your work or your life? What kind of people do you want to be around throughout all this? Answer those questions clearly and honestly for yourself, and you will be able to find and connect with compatible people on your campus.
Avoid the destruction: Learn the telltale signs of an out-of-control ego in someone else and even in yourself.
The cardinal rule of being a mascot is to keep your actual identity secret… it’s not a guy in a duck suit, it’s The Duck. The title of my keynote speech, Always Wear Your Head, came to me after watching another mascot’s ego get in the way, as he purposely removed the head to show his face to the crowd. This always reminds me to make sure I’m doing things for the right reasons.
