Alcohol Myths Busted by Rick Barnes
There is a lot of false information out there about what can really happen when someone’s had too much to drink, the warning signs and how to deal with the situation. Unfortunately, not knowing the facts, will cause more harm than good.
In his keynote, Drink Think, Rick Barnes gets students thinking about the choices they make regarding alcohol. It’s not a lecture, but rather an eye-opener. Instead of telling students what to do—Rick cracks open common myths in the college realm regarding alcohol consumption. Getting students to make smarter choices when confronted with alcohol related issues is the ultimate goal of this keynote.
MYTH: “Nothing like this will ever happen to me and my friends!”
FACT: Although many college students make responsible decisions regarding alcohol use, the number of cases of alcohol poisoning is way too high.
MYTH: “People pass out from drinking all the time – it’s nothing to worry about!”
FACT: We need to face it for what it is – a potential medical emergency. Take care of it as if it were an emergency. Don’t get stuck saying, “I wish we had done something.”
MYTH: “When someone passes out, the best thing to do is just to let them sleep it off!”
FACT: This is classic alcohol poisoning. It is dangerous to assume they can ‘just sleep it off. Take care of this person right away.
MYTH: “If my friend passes out, I don’t think I would call for help – that might get him/her in trouble!”
FACT: It is better for your friend to wake up and be mad at you than to never wake up at all.
