Brian’s new keynote, Reel Big Bullies, tackles the often-silenced campus topic of fear and intimidation. National incidents like school shootings at Columbine High or at Virginia Tech, and the rash suicides of gay teens and college students have cast new light on the age-old problem of bullying. Brian seeks to help students, administrators, teachers and counselors create a safer school environment for all students.
“I would love for students to understand the impacts, positive and negative, they make on others. If we can learn to affirm the human worth and dignity in every individual, we may be able to create school and community atmospheres where learning and respect go hand in hand.”
Brian will use clips from Hollywood blockbusters like Knocked Up and Benchwarmers to help all students understand the terrible toll bullying can take on it’s victims, and encourage students to stand up for their classmates who are being harassed.
“This keynote is born of my desire to see a better world in our schools. In some ways, we all have been bullied. Most of us can recall a time when we have felt targeted, put down, made to feel less and none us enjoyed that feeling, yet Hollywood makes it seem normal, even funny. But when is the last time you saw someone laughing while being bullied?”
