Stacy Nadeau Urges Young Women to End Fat Talk
This fall, STACY NADEAU is teaming up with Tri Delta as the official spokesperson for Fat Talk Free Week, October 18-22, 2010. More and more, young college women are exposed to media images of unhealthy or unrealistic body images as well as messages about what women should look like, some of them coming from women themselves. Stacy and Tri Delta feel that this detrimental social phenomenon among young women needs to end and end quickly.
Fat Talk Free Week is a five-day public awareness effort sponsored by Tri Delta, The Center for Living, Learning and Leading, and other partners. The campaign is intended to draw attention to the damaging impact of fat talk and the “thin ideal” on today’s women. “Fat talk” describes all of the statements made in everyday conversation that reinforce the thin ideal and contribute to women’s dissatisfaction with their bodies.
This groundbreaking campaign hopes to raise the nation’s consciousness about the dangers of fat talk and the impact it has on women’s overall self-esteem and confidence. Stacy and Tri Delta are asking all women to make the pledge to spread this message by eliminating “fat talk” from their conversations.
Stacy’s Message:
Did you know that in a Klarman Eating Disorder Study, seven out of ten women felt more depressed and angry after viewing images of female fashion models?
Did you know that when given the chance, 30% of women chose an ideal body shape that is 20% underweight and an additional 44% chose an ideal body shape that is 10% underweight. (University of Colorado)
Have you ever approached someone who has lost weight and responded: “you look great! Have you lost weight?”
Do you think statements to yourself such as: “I’m so fat” or “I need to lose ten pounds”?
All of these feeling, statements, and thoughts are examples of fat talk. As I prepare for the upcoming events of Fat Talk Free Week, I’ve been working on eliminating fat talk/fat thoughts from my vocabulary
I could not be more excited about Fat Talk Free Week. It is a time that we as women of influence are able to become leaders to those around us. We have the power to set amazing examples for women everywhere; we can help end fat talk for good. As those leaders, we need to prepare. We cannot wait until Fat Talk Free Week is here to make the change. We must implement those changes now.
Be conscious of what you say to those around you. Be conscious of what you say about yourself. Not only be conscious of what you say out loud, but also be conscious of what you say to yourself; those pesky negative thoughts that sometimes creep into our heads. Focus on the positives around you and encourage all of your sisters to make this change along side you. As negative comments come out of their mouths, kindly remind them that Fat Talk Free Week is approaching and we need to be ready!
We are the leaders. We are the women that have the power to change our communities and make women everywhere feel great about themselves! I challenge all of you to begin preparing for Fat Talk Free Week 2010. Focus on the positives, enjoy the fall season of the school year, and be the example! I can’t wait to see how you all prepare and celebrate for Fat Talk Free Week 2010!
