THE BIG STORY

What are you doing to prevent hazing on your campus?

What are you doing to prevent hazing on your campus?

WIth National Hazing Prevention Week (NHPW) coming up on September 19-23, it’s time to determine how you’re going to educate those in your campus community about the harmful effects of this pertinent campus issue.

NHPW was created by CAMPUSPEAK and their sister-organization, HazingPrevention.Org, to bring attention to hazing on campuses, classrooms, locker rooms and within student organizations. We’ve been educating individuals, whether they are students, advisors, campus police or community members about hazing and identifying the issue when it occurs.

CAMPUSPEAK offers a variety of speakers and workshops that hit on the critical issue of hazing. Take a glimpse into the the keynotes and programs that are great for NHPW and other hazing prevention programming throughout the year.

TRAVIS APGAR tells his emotional story and the pain and hidden harm caused by his hazing experiences. It is an in-depth and personal look at hazing from the perspective of a victim. After hearing Travis’ keynote, students will truly understand the negative effects hazing can have on a person.

RICK BARNES takes an honest look at hazing, the problems it causes and the reasons it continues to exist on campus. He challenges participants to take a serious look at how they work with their newest members and addresses the necessity of moving to a more contemporary role of new member intake, rather than allowing hazing to continue to exist in your organization.

MARI ANN CALLAIS’ keynote is not from a hazing perspective of what not to do, but from the perspective of why are chapters still participating in activities and behavior that contradict our values as people and as organizations.

JUDGE MITCH CRANE addresses hazing by explaining what the legal system would do to a person who killed their “brother” or “sister” and quickly draws the parallel to Fraternity and Sorority Life. Students will leave Mitch’s keynote with a look at why hazing and other destructive behaviors must stop.

MICHELLE GUOBADIA is one of the strongest, most refreshing speakers today with enough courage to one-by-one debunk what some may deem “traditions” of new member recruitment and education. Her keynote uncovers the myths about hazing in a straight forward and entertaining way.

ERLE MORRING draws students into the experiences that forever changed his view of fraternity and the values of Fraternity and Sorority Life. He openly discusses the mistakes and bad choices he and his peers made, both as individuals and as chapter and council leaders, with regard to harmful fraternity hazing traditions.

MINDY SOPHER has a keynote unlike any other hazing programs that might focus on scare tactics, stories of death and legal liability, or regulations, Mindy’s program takes a more emotional approach.  She asks each student to look into his or her heart and find a more worthy approach to new member education and inclusion.

THE INTAKE EQUATION Workshop hits the core challenges surrounding hazing and intake. It challenges student leaders to action, and gives them the confidence and urgency necessary to make significant change at the grassroots level.

Whatever your plans may be for NPHW, make a positive impact on your campus and for the students who wish to make a positive contribution to your organization.
