Introducing Crossing the Line, a day-long retreat designed to address hazing in our campus communities.
For information on our NEW program for Multicultural and Black Greeks organizations, The Intake Equation, go here!
Crossing the Line has been designed with an aim to help students and administrators talk openly about hazing on your campus or in your organization. Hazing is a cultural problem, exacerbated by secrecy and students’ belief in the importance of tradition. This program is designed to bring students (and administrators if desired) together to discuss the issues surrounding hazing including: possible purposes that hazing serves, the different levels of hazing that might be taking place on your campus or in your organization, and the farreaching impact that hazing can have on organizations, teams, campuses, communities and families.
Students from Greek life, athletics, clubs and other organizations will come together to explore this serious topic over the course of one full day. The true nature of hazing will be brought to the forefront through a series of group activities, discussion, and individual exercises.
The program goals are:
- to provide a safe atmosphere for students and administrators to discuss hazing
- to provide a setting in which to explore perceptions and evaluate how they impact the community’s ability to effectively deal with hazing
- to provide resources and a starting point for campus community members to work together within their organizations as well as the larger community to stop hazing.
This program is not the end of all the hazing problems on your campus. It is designed to be a beginning. In bringing all the groups to the table, Crossing the Line challenges students and administrators to keep the conversation going and better yet, to take action on educational, accountability and disciplinary fronts.
Program Goal:
"To provide a safe atmosphere for students and administrators to discuss hazing, to provide a setting in which to explore perceptions and evaluate how they impact the community's ability to effectively deal with this problem on campus, and to provide resources, and a starting point, for campus community members to work together within their organizations as well as the larger campus community to stop hazing."
At the completion of the Crossing the Line program, participants will:
- Have come to consensus about what are acceptable and unacceptable "traditions" and/or "rights of passage" for their campus and within your organizations
- Have defined the purposes of hazing activities and brainstormed a list of activities that meet the same goals in a positive manner.
- Understand the long and short-term effects of hazing upon individuals and organizations.
- Have tools and resources for addressing hazing on personal, organizational, and community levels.
- Be able to articulate personal, organizational, and community values and how their actions in regard to hazing align with those values.
- Leave with a plan of action for implementing change and developing cooperation on a personal, organizational, and/or community level.
