National Hazing Prevention Week grew out of a meeting that took place at the Association of Fraternity Advisors 2003 Annual Meeting in San Antonio, TX. The hour long meeting was convened to discuss the problem of hazing, and it was followed by a brainstorm during AFA’s business meeting about future initiatives. One of the ideas that came out of the brainstorm was a national symposium to bring together people in higher education, parents, military personnel, and others interested in helping in the fight against hazing. Once planning for the first National Hazing Symposium was underway, the idea for a national awareness week was conceived by the CAMPUSPEAK staff. The first one took place in late September of 2005.
National Hazing Prevention Week is bringing attention to the problem of hazing across the country, and providing the perfect opportunity for campuses and national organizations to plan educational activities for students and others. The week itself is always the last week in September, but campuses are encouraged to plan their own events anytime during the year that suits their own schedule and needs. Campuses and organizations are further encouraged to plan year-round campaigns to educate students about the dangers of hazing, and help them find alternatives to this practice.
Neither the National Hazing Symposium nor National Hazing Prevention Week would be possible without the generous support of numerous partners in higher education. Please take the time to visit the websites of our generous sponsors. Members of sponsoring organizations receive kits to help them plan programs and events for NHPW. This year, for the first time, those kits and other resources for NHPW are being made available to the general public. Please go here to read more about what is available and download and order form.
We are proud to be able to offer an extensive array of free resources on this page as well. They include articles about hazing incidents, sample policies, programs, definitions and ideas for combating hazing, posters and wallet cards developed by campuses and many other useful documents and ideas. Please share your own good ideas, documents, programs, sample schedules from NHPW or other information about what YOU DID for NHPW on your campus or within your organization. Please follow this link to upload information to be shared on our website: Feedback
Whether you plan an entire week of events or simply hold a roundtable discussion or policy review, please do something to commemorate NHPW 2007 – September 24-28! It is never too early to begin the fight to end hazing.
