The death of fraternity pledge Scott Kreuger in 1997 sent ripples through the fraternity and sorority world.
Weeks into the fall semester of 1997, Massachusetts Institute of Technology freshman Scott Krueger died from complications caused by alcohol poisoning. The tragedy was heavily publicized and brought new attention to the persisted problem of tradition-based alcohol abuse that exists in many fraternities and sororities across the United States.
To address this tragedy and to raise awareness, the film “Tell Me Something I Don’t Know” was created. The documentary chronicles many of the events at the fraternity party that preceded Scott’s untimely death. Specifically the film explores the loss suffered by his family, the legal action taken against members of the organization, and an explanation of the effect alcohol poisoning played in Scott Krueger’s death.
“Tell Me Something I Don’t Know” won a 2003 Emmy award, and has been hailed by many educators and fraternity professionals as one of the best educational projects on the issue of high-risk fraternity drinking.
Because of the frank nature and targeted language of “Tell Me Something I Don't Know,” a CAMPUSPEAK facilitator is present to provide insightful and enlightening answers to questions dealing with both the physical and legal ramifications of alcohol abuse.
Testimonials:
“The combination of straight talk about today’s campus drinking environment, the re-enactment of Scott’s death, and the reality of consequences of poor choices by members clearly made an impact. For an audience who thinks they’ve heard it all and who comes in skeptical, Tell Me Something I Don’t Know cut through the clutter and gave students something to remember.”
Wynn Smiley, CEO of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity
"I had almost every member of the five fraternities come and tell me what an impact this lecture had on them. It was elections that same night for most of the fraternities, and a lot of the guys running were reconsidering their positions because of the lecture. This is good because they did not realize how much liability was involved."
