Wise
Words From A Wiseguy
Alcohol,
Drugs, and HIV in a Comedic Lecture
Michael DeStefano, otherwise
known as “Mikee D.” is a stand-up comedian as well as
a campus lecturer with a powerful message for students about alcohol,
safe sex, and HIV/AIDS. The dynamics of alcohol abuse and sexual health
are a cornerstone of his college programs. Mike understands that any
discussion of sex and young people must include the “dangers
of alcohol that most often lead to unhealthy choices."
It was an inspirational presentation with an important message about alcohol and drug abuse. Mike was very easy to work with and seemed to really love what he does. He made the students laugh a lot, which is very hard to do!

After overcoming his own addictions and becoming a substance abuse
counselor in New York, Mike was diagnosed HIV-positive in 1988. In
1993, he got married and moved to Florida to start a new life. He
became a professional health educator with the Florida Department
of Health and hosted a radio talk show on a South Florida radio station.
His wife, Franny, worked as a director of a substance abuse treatment
center. Sadly, Fran succumbed to AIDS-related illnesses and died in
1995.
In his presentation Wise
Words From A Wiseguy, he tells his story of an abusive
childhood, alcohol and heroin addictions, the death of his wife from
AIDS-related causes, and his own HIV infection.
Because his program is equal parts stand-up comedy and thoughtful
lecture, Mike is perfect for a variety of campus events, and he can
adjust as necessary from situation to situation. Consider him for
awareness weeks, or simply for a Friday night entertainment program
with a message.
"Our student-athletes really enjoyed this presentation. They were entertained and enlightened all at the same time. Normally they bolt out of the room after a life skills presentation. Last night many of them stuck around to talk to Mike after the show."

Can
I Borrow Your Closet?
How
A Tough Guy Overcame Homophobia
"Standing
there were two guys in their 20s, they were in love and not ashamed
to show it. They caressed one another and kissed. It
made me want to puke."
Comedian and activist Mike DeStefano hadn't even seen a real live
homosexual before that day in 1988. Growing up in the Italian
part of the Bronx, he spent time with his friends hanging out on street
corners and throwing bodies into the trunks of Lincoln Town Cars (well,
not really). His care-free lifestyle lead him to alcoholism
and drug abuse. When he was diagnosed with HIV, or "the gay
plague" as it was called, his friends went AWOL. They offered
to find the guy who "put AIDS in his coffee," break his legs, then
buy Mike a canoli. Unable to find understanding and compassion
with his old "friends," Mike was forced to overcome his homophobia
and turn to the gay community for support.
"Can I Borrow Your Closet?" is an hysterical, thought-provoking, politically
incorrect look at fear, acceptance, and homophobia. With his
New York-style of comedy, Mike DeStefano breaks down the stereotypes
and shares his own personal story, while relating to students that
may not understand the GLBT lifestyle. This program is great
for GLBT events, leadership conferences, diversity workshops, first
year experience, and "tough crowds" that need to understand tolerance.
