Crossing the Line delves into the 'Why we haze' as much as the 'How' and the results. The hazing culture in a chapter or group must be factored in for meaningful change and from my review this is given significant attention in Crossing the Line.
Dave Westol, Limberlost Consulting
Crossing the Line is a 6-hour workshop that brings together all of campus groups (and administrators, if desired) to address the complex issues of hazing. The possibility of hazing is in every campus group, so this workshop has been designed to be applicable to all organizations.
Whether a campus has a clearly identified problem with hazing, or simply wants to prevent the evolution of harmful traditions, Crossing the Line is a perfect starting point to initiate positive change. With interactive activities and discussions, our facilitators help students open up and talk frankly about an issue that is often shrouded in secrecy.
This workshop will help students demystify “rites of passage,” understand the effects of hazing, gain resources and tools for addressing hazing, and create an action plan that they can implement immediately.
At the completion of the Crossing the Line workshops, participants will:
- Have come to consensus about what are acceptable and unacceptable “traditions” and/or “rights of passage” for their campus and within your organizations
- Have defined the purposes of hazing activities and brainstormed a list of activities that meet the same goals in a positive manner
- Understand the long and short-term effects of hazing upon individuals and organizations
- Have tools and resources for addressing hazing on personal, organizational and community levels
- Be able to articulate personal, organizational, and community values and how their actions in regard to hazing align with those values
- Leave with a plan of action for implementing change and developing cooperation on a personal, organizational and/or community level
The workshop is designed to be a beginning of a process to end hazing problems on campuses. By bringing all the groups to the table, Crossing the Line challenges students and administrators to keep the conversation going and better yet, to take action on educational, accountability and disciplinary fronts.
Workshop Goals
- To provide a safe atmosphere for students and administrators to discuss hazing
- To provide a setting in which to explore perceptions and evaluate how they impact the community’s ability to effectively deal with hazing
- To provide resources and a starting point for campus community members to work together within their organizations as well as the larger community to stop hazing
